This is water

“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day.”
― David Foster Wallace, This is Water

Below is an abridged version of the original audio recording, of the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College by David Foster Wallace (February 21, 1962 – September 12, 2008)

Each year a new class joins me and others such as myself in the working adult world to later be worn down by the day to day. It doesn’t always have to be this way. The point of the address is the importance of keeping things in mind: That we don’t just need to learn the big lessons the first time around, we (you) need to remember them, and then never forget them, even when faced with a whole sea of everyday troubles.

I forget this from time to time and when I remember things such as this I too remember that I can change my way of thinking and look at things differently. Bad days can be better days and better days can be your best of days. Those who know me personally know I see things very differently most of the time and I hope by sharing this with them they can too.
