2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport – We Are Back!

In 2020, my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport Edition started using an excessive amount of oil. It took a frustrating year of tests and investigation at the dealership to diagnose the problem as a known oil consumption issue with this engine. Thankfully, the warranty covered the replacement of the transmission and lower engine block.

Fast forward to 2024, and I’m experiencing the same oil consumption problem again. The car went into limp mode and burned through 2 quarts of oil, car falling into limp mode, rattling/tapping… It looks like I’m back at the dealership again!

Follow me as I log these events and my experience:

  • 2024-04-19 – Oil Change before road trip.
  • 2024-04-25 – Retuning from road trip – 880 miles later
  • 2024-04-25 – Current Car miles 109296
  • 2024-04-25 – Car in Limp Mode, Code P1326
  • 2024-04-25 – Car towed to dealership
  • 2024-04-29 – Dealership tech found code P1326 knock sensor code. Tech followed the T3G flow chart and performed bearing clearance test, tech states engine passed BCT at this time. Tech checked for KSDS update and stated update was not performed. Tech proceeded to perform update of KSDS and reset engine adaptive values. Tech stated check engine light is now off and vehicle is operating as it should at this time.
  • 2024-04-29 – When asking service manager at dealership for explanation of oil burning, they could not provide a response and advise me to come in end-week for another oil change to baseline and monitor from there.
  • 2024-05-04 – At the dealership to get an oil change to begin the oil consumption process.
