VMware Lab Manager Client Issue: Case #1

A recent error experienced by one of my end users is whenever she attempts to open lab manager she receives the following error that states “C:Program Files (x86)Internet Explorerpluginsvmware-remotemks.exe: this executable should not be invoked directly.

This happens because the lab manager website is attempting to open web content using a program on the computer which does not have a valid / known digital signature that verifies its publisher.  This causes the program to open outside of the IE’s “Protected Mode” putting your computer at risk.

Even clicking “allow” causes the program to have an error of “Bad Handle 0xb90” followed by the error ““C:Program Files (x86)Internet Explorerpluginsvmware-remotemks.exe: this executable should not be invoked directly”

This does not happen when you run IE (Internet Explorer) as Administrator

So another solution which may help would be to disable the “enable protected mode” within IE Settings.  DON’T DO THIS – The better solution is to simply add the website address to your trusted sites.

In conclusion; the security features in Internet Explorer in addition to VMware not properly signing its application created a situation where IE was unable to verify the publisher as trusted.
